Three volunteers from Nabarro, kitted out in Nabarro shirts, made the trip down to an old school-style building in Kennington on 19 November 2010 to take part in a sports event designed by Fairbridge's young people. Their aim was to help the young people achieve their Community Sport Leadership Award by taking part in a selection of events designed and run by the young people.
The Community Sport Leadership Award scheme, and what Fairbridge achieves through it, is brilliant. It gives young people from disadvantaged backgrounds the opportunity not only to gain qualifications to take them further in life, but also the chance to build their confidence and leadership skills by running an event, something that none of them have ever done before.
The young people were at the forefront of the day, co-ordinating sporting events for the volunteers to take part in and acting as referees. Handball and Benchball were the games of the day for Nabarro, having arrived about half an hour earlier than their competitors to garner a large advantage in learning the games and befriending the young people. Both of these things ultimately paid dividends, with Nabarro emerging champions on the day!
The volunteers all had a great day, taking part in challenging sporting activities, although there were a few sore hamstrings the next day! They commented that they were incredibly impressed with the Fairbridge young people and that the young people seemed to gain a huge amount from the day. All in all, Fairbridge is a charity that gives a lot back, has the future of young people as its aim and helps them fulfil their potential. Days such as this show the ways employees can get involved and help disadvantaged young people develop their skills and fulfil their potential, whilst having great fun at the same time. |
