1. The Nabarro Community Centre (NCC) has been used for three official functions since the opening last December:
2. Substantially all of the furniture and equipment (financed by the Firm) has been delivered; the computer room is waiting for a line connection; the library is constructed and now needs some books!
3. English classes began on 10 May with 36 children and 76 adults enrolling.
4. Four teachers have been recruited so far – two for English and two for the Pre-School. The main English teacher is a graduate from Nottingham University. It is hoped that she will become the head teacher to take full control of all the educational activities in the NCC. A Mathematics teacher is still to be recruited.
5. The Pre School and Day Care Centre for 30 children will open on 1 August.
6. Teaching of English and Mathematics to 180 GCSE students from the Galle district will commence in August.
7. Classes for the ladies in the Village on needlework, cookery, gardening etc will begin in July.
8. The Children’s Educational Sponsorship Scheme has so far obtained sponsors for 30 of the 55 children in the Village. 5 members of our staff have already become sponsors. Anyone else who would like further details about the Scheme should contact David Sargison.
9. The scheme to encourage UK schools to visit the Village as part of a GCSE Geography project has stalled for the present primarily because of the security situation in the country. However, schools from other parts of Sri Lanka have visited Hampton Village and made use of the dedicated visitor facilities.
10. A Hampton Village website is being developed and the Firm has agreed to become a main sponsor.
11. A Charity Dinner Dance is to be held in the UK on Saturday 12 July in raise funds for a major drainage project and a Village Shop. The Firm is taking two tables at this event at which the new website will be launched by Nicky Paradise.
